Many numbers of things. If you're not going to be specific (when does it crash, how does it crash, why does it crash, have you updated or modified it, what version of Windows, what kind of Internet, what virus protection, etc), then I don't have a clue what your problem is, so here's some possibilities:

-Virus. A virus could infect your system and slow or crash your browser. Try running a virus scan. If you don't have a scanner, I recommend AVG Free, it's a good quality one that's free.

-Spyware. Not likely, but if you have an older computer that is usually slow, excessive spyware could render it unusable in no time. Run a spyware check using either the SpySweeper trial, AdAware Free, Spybot Search and Destroy, or numerous other programs.

-Plugins or modifications. If you recently installed a browser modification or plugin (toolbars, Flash, Shockwave, Java, or other script language support), that plugin could be causing the problem. Also, certain sites may have flaws in their Java or Flash applications that may crash your browser.

-It's Microsoft! Expect it to crash. If Microsoft were an airline, the tickets would be expensive, but you'd get a nice in-flight meal. The food would be good and the service would be great. The plane would then spontaneously blow up 10 minutes into the flight for no apparent reason. How to fix it? Use something else. If you don't switch to Linux (I recommend it, but it can be hard), at least get Mozilla Firefox, a much safer and less buggy browser that won't crash very often.
I agree with rhs_tyler. Firefox works so much better. It hardly ever crashes. I quit using IE a year ago and never looked back.
